KABUL: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Tuesday night that the Japanese government has donated $6.3 million to eradicate poliomyelitis (polio) in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the Japanese embassy in Afghanistan stated that this financial aid package would be utilized in collaboration with UNICEF through Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
In a statement, the Japanese embassy emphasized Japan’s commitment to protecting every child and ensuring that no one is left without support.
UNICEF has confirmed that the Japanese aid package will be used to combat polio across 34 provinces of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries in Asia where polio remains endemic.
The Ministry of Public Health is working, in coordination with international organizations, to eradicate this deadly disease in Afghanistan.
