KABUL: China said it will continue diplomatic efforts to help establish a ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan as clashes persist between the two sides.
In a statement posted Monday, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China said Beijing has been actively engaged in mediation efforts.
The statement cited recent discussions by Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts, as well as visits by Yue Xiaoyong, China’s special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, as examples of ongoing diplomatic engagement.
“China hopes Afghanistan and Pakistan will remain calm and exercise restraint, resume face-to-face dialogue as soon as possible, reach a ceasefire at an early date, and resolve their differences through talks,” the statement said.
The comments come as fighting between Afghan forces and Pakistani troops has continued in recent days along their shared border.
