Afghanistan releases detained U.S. citizen, ministry

KABUL: The country’s Foreign Ministry said a detained U.S. citizen, Dennis Quill, has been released from prison.
According to a statement from the ministry on Tuesday, his release was announced during a meeting between Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister, and Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. envoy for Afghan peace, with representatives from the United Arab Emirates and a family member of Quill also present.
Muttaqi said the decision was made after Quill’s mother, who had appealed in a letter to the Islamic Emirate Leader for his release on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
He added that Afghanistan’s supreme court deemed the time served sufficient and approved his release.
The minister said: “Detainees are held based on legal violations rather than political motives and are released following judicial processes.”
He also thanked the UAE, particularly Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for facilitating the release.
Khalilzad welcomed the move, calling it a positive step and stressing the importance of continued dialogue between Kabul and Washington.
