KABUL: Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, met with Zhao Xing, the Chinese ambassador in Kabul, to discuss bilateral cooperation, regional developments, and ongoing talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan in Urumqi, China.
According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, Muttaqi thanked China for hosting and facilitating the talks between the Afghan and Pakistani delegations.
He also praised mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, saying the talks have so far been constructive and should not be stopped by minor differences.
Zhao provided updates on the progress of the Urumqi talks, emphasizing China’s neutral efforts to build trust and confidence between Kabul and Islamabad.
The statement quoting Zhao Xing, as saying: “Given an understanding of the region’s geopolitical situation, it is expected that the process of confidence-building between Afghanistan and Pakistan, goodwill, and the absence of violence will continue.”
Muttaqi reiterated that Afghanistan’s stance in recent clashes has been defensive, stressing the country’s right to self-defense while reaffirming its commitment to dialogue based on mutual respect.
Talks between Afghan and Pakistani delegations have been ongoing in Urumqi for several days, aimed at reducing tensions.
