LASHKARGAH: Four women died after drowning in the Helmand River, while two others were rescued, provincial officials confirmed.
According to Mawlavi Shir Mohammad Wahdat, deputy head of the Information and Culture Department in Helmand, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Ainak area of Nawa District.
Wahdat said the women were traveling with a family member and had briefly stopped near the river, when an elderly woman was swept away by the current, others attempted to rescue her but were also caught in the water.
During the rescue attempt, two women, including the elderly individual were saved, while the river carried away four others. So far, the bodies of two victims have been recovered, while two remain missing.
Officials noted that drowning incidents tend to rise with warmer weather, especially in hotter regions.
In a separate recent incident, two children a boy and a girl also drowned in the same district, with their bodies yet to be found.
