KABUL: The Politico, citing U.S. officials and sources reported that President Donald Trump decided on military action against Iran after receiving calls from the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan, who reportedly assured him that a diplomatic agreement was within reach.
The report said the three countries, which maintain channels of communication with Tehran, conveyed to Trump that the path to diplomacy remained open.
Trump later announced that a “major agreement” had been reached and suggested that it could be signed in the coming days.
According to Politico, the reported deal is currently focused less on Iran’s nuclear program and more on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing immediate regional tensions.
The report also noted that discussions are underway regarding Iran’s access to more than $16 billion in restricted financial assets held in Qatar and other countries.
