Trump says U.S.-Iran war will end “very soon”

KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that the war between the United States and Iran would end “very soon,” suggesting it could conclude shortly after the U.S. midterm elections in November.

Speaking at a rally in Mobile, Alabama, Trump said the conflict would likely be over after the elections but did not provide details on how or through what arrangement the war would end.

“That war is going to be over soon. One way or the other,” Trump said, adding that it would end “very soon and probably right after the midterms.”

Trump has made similar statements in recent weeks, repeatedly saying that the conflict would end soon. On September 28, he said U.S. officials had been communicating with mediators seeking to end the war and said the conflict would be resolved “pretty quickly.”

The conflict has continued amid tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, regional security and the Strait of Hormuz. Diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement have also continued, although the details and prospects of a final settlement remain unclear.

Trump has also linked the end of the conflict to the U.S. military objective of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. However, he has not specified a concrete timeline or terms for ending the fighting.
