2025 deadliest year on record for journalists, says Committee to Protect Journalists

KABUL: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has said that 2025 was the deadliest year for journalists worldwide, with 129 reporters and media workers killed.
In a report released this week, CPJ said two-thirds of those killed in 2025 were allegedly killed by Israeli forces, marking the second consecutive year of record-high journalist fatalities.
According to the report, more than 60 percent of the 86 media workers who died as a result of Israeli fire in 2025 were Palestinians reporting from Gaza.
CPJ described the surge in deaths as unprecedented in more than three decades of record-keeping, attributing the trend to what it called the “ongoing and unparalleled targeting” of journalists and media workers by Israel.
The organization added that, beyond Gaza, Israel’s military operations in Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran also resulted in journalist casualties.
After Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine recorded some of the highest journalist death tolls in 2025, with nine and four fatalities respectively, largely due to ongoing conflicts.
The Committee to Protect Journalists is a U.S.-based global organization that advocates for the rights and safety of journalists.
