KABUL: Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) have signed four Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) worth over $1.5 million to support mine clearance and humanitarian efforts.
According to a statement from the NDMA press office, the MoUs have been signed on Monday by Mullah Nooruddin Turabi and Dania Al Sharif to establish mechanical demining teams, clear contaminated areas, and raise awareness about landmines and unexploded ordnance.
The projects will be implemented across several provinces, including Kabul, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Kunar, Nangarhar, Nimroz, and Kandahar provinces.
Plans include forming multiple field demining units, rapid response teams, mechanical clearance teams, and public awareness groups to address mine risks.
Authorities say awareness programs will reach over 25,000 earthquake-affected families in eastern provinces and more than 126,000 returnees in southern and western regions.
Turabi stressed transparency in project implementation and called for additional technical support, including equipment for safely breaking rocks in hazardous areas.
This comes as unexploded ordnance and mines claimed the lives of Afghans, particularly children.
