KABUL: Afghan border forces have prevented the smuggling of nearly 13,000 narcotic pills and a quantity of alcoholic beverages at several border crossings across the country, in the past one month, officials said Monday.
Abdullah Uqab Farooqi, spokesperson for the General Directorate of Border Police Forces at the Ministry of Interior, said the narcotic pills and alcohol were discovered at the Hairatan border crossing in northern Balkh, the Islam Qala border crossing in western Herat, and the Pul-e-Abrisham border crossing in southwestern Nimroz.
He added that authorities also prevented the smuggling of hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars through border points during the same period.
In total, 34 individuals were arrested in connection with attempts to smuggle narcotics, alcohol, and illicit currency, the spokesperson said.
He further added that anti-smuggling operations across Afghanistan’s borders are ongoing as part of broader security and enforcement efforts.
