KABUL: Iranian state media have reported that funeral ceremonies for former religious leader Ali Khamenei will begin on July 4 in Tehran and conclude on July 9 with burial ceremonies in his hometown of Mashhad.
According to reports, special commemorative events will also be held on July 7 in the city of Qom as part of the funeral proceedings.
The ceremonies are being held more than 100 days after his reported death, with sources saying that wartime conditions and security concerns delayed the burial process.
Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic of Iran for 36 years, was reportedly targeted in joint U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on February 28 of this year.
Iranian officials expect a large number of religious and political figures from across the country and abroad to attend the funeral ceremonies.
