KABUL: The country’s Ministry of Public Works has signed a contract worth 1.252 billion Afghanis with a road construction company to rehabilitate a 15-kilometer section of the Southern Salang Highway as part of the broader reconstruction of the Salang route.
The project covers a 15-kilometer stretch from Olang to Jabal Saraj, where the road will be rebuilt as a 12-meter-wide asphalt highway.
The project also includes the construction of five new culverts, the expansion of 33 existing culverts, and the construction of a 600-meter drainage canal along one side of the road, according to the ministry.
During the signing ceremony, Public Works Minister Mullah Mohammad Essa Sani said the Salang Highway is one of Afghanistan’s most important economic and transit corridors and stressed the need to complete the project on time and according to engineering standards.
The Salang Highway connects Afghanistan’s northern provinces with Kabul and serves as a vital route for passenger travel as well as the transportation of commercial goods and agricultural products.
