KABUL: Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, has called on Pakistan to pursue diplomatic solutions in response to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ appeal for an end to the recent escalation of tensions involving Pakistan.
In a post on X, Khalilzad noted that the UN Secretary-General had urged Afghanistan and Pakistan to halt the violence and resolve their differences through diplomacy.
He added that Afghanistan has repeatedly stated its preference for a diplomatic solution and has put forward several proposals aimed at reducing tensions.
The former U.S. envoy further questioned whether Pakistan’s ruling would heed the UN Secretary-General’s call.
“Will the power structure in Pakistan listen to the Secretary-General’s appeal?” Khalilzad asked, adding, “I hope so, but I am not optimistic.”
His remarks come as the United Nations has called for an immediate end to hostilities and the protection of civilians following recent Pakistani military strikes on parts of Afghanistan.
