World Bank says reforming food systems can strengthen Afghanistan’s economy

KABUL: The World Bank, in its latest report, has stated that transforming food and agricultural systems could strengthen food security, create employment opportunities, and enhance economic resilience in Afghanistan and the broader region.
According to the report, Afghanistan, alongside countries in the Middle East, Southern Africa, and Pakistan, faces serious challenges related to climate change, water scarcity, conflict, and food insecurity.
The World Bank emphasized that if substantial investments are made in the sector, the business environment is improved, and food production, processing, and distribution chains are modernized, the conditions could be created for generating up to five million new jobs in the food and agriculture sectors across the region, including Afghanistan, by 2050.
