KABUL: Tomas Niklasson, the European Union’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, said in a statement on X on Sunday that his mission has concluded in the country.
“My departure does not signal any change in the EU’s approach to Afghanistan. The EU maintains its presence in the country, a commitment to the people of Afghanistan while protecting EU interests and values, and engages with Afghanistan and partners based on Council Conclusions,” he said.
He stated that until a successor is appointed by the EU, responsibilities will be carried out by Deren Derya, Head of Division for Afghanistan and Pakistan at the EU.
He also emphasized that the EU’s presence in Afghanistan will continue, as the EU is committed to the people of this country.
In his remarks, Tomas Niklasson added that the conclusion of his mission will not alter the EU’s approach toward Afghanistan.
Over the past three years and ten months, he has worked in the role of Special Representative for the EU in Afghanistan, managing the relations between Europe and Afghanistan along with the EU Embassy in Kabul.
