Afghanistan ready to expand relations with Southeast Asia, says Muttaqi

KABUL: Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, has stated that the Islamic Emirate intends to expand its relations with Southeast Asian countries during a meeting with Dato Ahmad Azam, Malaysia’s Special Representative for Afghanistan.
According to a statement from the Ministry on Saturday during the discussions, the two officials addressed the political and economic ties between Afghanistan and Malaysia, as well as enhancing bilateral cooperation.
The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs described the diplomatic, religious, economic, and cultural relations between Afghanistan and Malaysia as expanding, expressing gratitude for Malaysia’s longstanding goodwill towards Afghanistan, the statement said.
Minister Muttaqi noted, “Afghanistan’s relationships with the international community are growing, and it has positive interactions with neighboring countries and the region.” He added that Afghanistan is also interested in strengthening ties with Southeast Asian nations.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian diplomatic delegation emphasized that their visit was guided by Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and underscored the importance of expanding relations between Kabul and Kuala Lumpur.
They also assessed the situation in Afghanistan as improving and expressed hope for increased high-level visits between the two countries.
Malaysia has maintained extensive relations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan over the past nearly four years.
