IEA investigates allegations of retaliatory treatment of returning migrants

KABUL: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan has announced that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is investigating allegations of retaliatory treatment of Afghan returning migrants, as highlighted in the quarterly report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, head of the Information and Public Relations Department at the Ministry, said in a statement on Sunday night, that the Prime Minister has tasked a joint committee led by the Ministry of Interior and including members from the Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice and the General Directorate of Intelligence to conduct a thorough investigation into the report.
This includes examining claims of torture, retaliatory actions, and arbitrary detentions of returning migrants.
The statement noted that while the report mentions some positive actions, it generally aims to create anxiety among returnees through misleading language rather than assisting them.
The Ministry argued that the UNAMA report, which is based on interviews with 49 returnee migrants, presents a limited and biased perspective, lacking proper documentation and standards.
The Ministry criticized the report for using politically charged language that calls into question its impartiality, particularly in relation to claims of retaliation, arbitrary detentions, torture, and mistreatment.
Recently, UNAMA published its quarterly report on the situation in Afghanistan, indicating that some Afghan returnees have faced mistreatment upon their return to the country.
