IEA signs $145 million fluorite mining deal in Kandahar

KABUL: Afghanistan’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has signed a contract worth 145 million afghanis for the extraction of a fluorite mine in Kandahar province.

According to a statement from the ministry, the mine is located in the Nesh district and the 30-year contract was signed between Mawlavi Abdul Rahman Qanet, Deputy Minister for Policy and Programs, and the private company Amania Mining Company.

Under the agreement, the government will receive a 35% royalty from processed output, provided the company operates in line with mining laws and contractual obligations.

The ministry added that the company is also required to meet social and environmental responsibilities as part of the contract.

Officials say the project is expected to create employment opportunities for around 150 people.

Fluorite is a valuable mineral used in chemical industries, including the production of hydrofluoric acid, as well as in metal processing and cement manufacturing.
