KABUL: The government of Japan has announced fully funded scholarship opportunities for Afghan citizens to pursue Master’s and PhD studies as “research students” for the 2027 academic year.
The Embassy of Japan in Afghanistan said in a statement on Monday that the scholarships are open to Afghan applicants regardless of religious, ethnic, or linguistic background.
According to the statement, the scholarships are being offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The number of scholarships available has not been specified.
Interested applicants can apply only through email until May 25.
The embassy added that written examinations for eligible candidates will be held on June 18, while interviews for successful applicants are scheduled for July in Kabul.
The Japanese Embassy and the Japanese government will oversee the testing and selection process, while the Aga Khan Foundation will assist only with collecting applications and facilitating the exams.
The embassy also stressed that all stages of the scholarship process are free of charge and warned that any financial transactions related to the program would be considered fraud.
According to the statement, both the written exams and interviews will be conducted in person in Kabul, and applicants will not be allowed to participate online from outside Afghanistan.
Japan has previously offered scholarship opportunities for Afghan students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.
