Kandahar officials foil attempt to smuggle hundreds of kilograms of mangoes

KANDAHAR: Afghan officials in Kandahar say they have seized a shipment of 581 kilograms of smuggled mangoes originating from Pakistan amid the ongoing suspension of trade between the two countries.
According to a statement released Sunday night by the Kandahar Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, quarantine officials from the Plant Protection Department discovered the shipment in the “Bagh Pul” area of the city’s seventh district.
Officials said the mangoes were hidden inside 87 wooden crates and transported in a Tunis-type vehicle through the Bahramcha district of Helmand before entering Kandahar.
The statement added that the shipment was discovered and confiscated through joint coordination among local authorities.
“Quarantine officials at Bagh Pul continue daily mobile campaigns to prevent the transfer of smuggled and illegal products, and no one will be allowed to transport smuggled goods into Kandahar province,” the statement said.
This comes as all imports and exports between Afghanistan and Pakistan have reportedly remained suspended for nearly eight months following the closure of border crossings.
