Emergency declared in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid security concerns

KABUL: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province amid growing security concerns.

Pakistan’s federal cabinet had proposed declaring an emergency in response to an expanding protest by supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the deteriorating security situation in the province.

The Pakistani government said emergency measures were necessary because of the worsening law-and-order situation and what it described as a lack of cooperation from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in addressing the challenges.

The decision comes as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi leads a march toward Islamabad, demanding Imran Khan’s release.
