KABUL: Construction work on an advanced reference laboratory worth 21 million Afghanis (some 306,716 U.S. dollars), during a ceremony has been kicked off in Nangarhar province, the Ministry of Public Health said in a statement on Tuesday.
Speaking in the ceremony, Mawlavi Abdul Wali Haqqani, the Deputy Minister for Health Service Delivery, called the establishment of this advanced laboratory a significant achievement for the residents of the eastern provinces of the country.
Haqqani said: “This will be the sixth major laboratory constructed in Afghanistan, featuring 24 departments and equipped with all necessary laboratory tools to provide diagnostic services to patients in various fields.”
According to the statement, he outlined the purpose of this laboratory as timely disease diagnosis for patients from Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, and Nuristan provinces, enhancing health sector capacities, and reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
The laboratory will be constructed by relevant sectors of the Ministry of Public Health, with the financial support of the Global Fund and technical assistance from UNDP, by the end of the current solar year.
