KABUL: Scott Smith, the political deputy of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), praised the Islamic Emirate’s measures in fighting drug-related issues during a meeting with Mawlavi Mohammad Qasim Khalid, Deputy Minister for Counter-Narcotics of the Ministry of Interior Affairs.
According to a statement from the Interior Ministry on Wednesday, in the meeting, the UNAMA official expressed gratitude for the leader of the Islamic Emirate’s decree regarding drug control.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the Islamic Emirate is serious about combating this abhorrent phenomenon and will not allow anyone to cultivate, produce, traffic, sell, or use drugs.
The statement noted that Mr. Khalid added that treatment for addicts, prevention, vocational training, providing alternative livelihoods for farmers, and eradicating drugs require international cooperation, as the drug issue is not only Afghanistan’s problem but a global one.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both the Deputy Minister for Counter-Narcotics and the UNAMA political deputy emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation.
In a decree, the Leader of the Islamic Emirate banned the cultivation, production, trafficking, sale, and use of drugs in the country.
