KABUL: French President Emmanuel Macron says he held phone calls with his counterparts in the United States and Iran Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian after the U.S.–Iran ceasefire agreement.
Macron wrote on X on Wednesday night that he told both leaders he believes the two‑week ceasefire agreement struck between Tehran and Washington is “the best possible decision” they could have made.
The French president added that in his conversations he expressed hope that the ceasefire would be fully respected by all parties across all conflict zones, including Lebanon, because he considers that full compliance to be essential for the truce’s durability.
Macron emphasized that the U.S.–Iran ceasefire should open the way for comprehensive talks that can provide security for everyone in the Middle East.
He said Paris will play its full part in coordination with partners in the region and that he has raised these points in recent discussions with leaders in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Iraq.
He voiced his hope for a Lebanese ceasefire even as Israeli strikes there have continued after the agreement to halt the war, a development that has angered Iranian leaders.
