KABUL: A total of 527 Afghan citizens have been released from Pakistani prisons and returned to Afghanistan over the past week, according to Afghan authorities.
The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said in a statement on Thursday that the individuals crossed back into the country through the Torkham Border Crossing in Nangarhar province and the Spin Boldak Border Crossing in Kandahar province.
According to the statement, those released had been detained by Pakistani police for lacking valid legal residency documents and had spent varying periods in detention.
Officials from the migration departments in Nangarhar and Kandahar said 487 people returned through Torkham, while 40 others crossed via Spin Boldak.
Upon arrival in Afghanistan, the returnees were registered and received humanitarian assistance before being transferred to their home areas.
The report also noted that arrests and detentions of Afghan citizens by Pakistani authorities continue in some areas.
