KABUL: Iranian state media reports that the country’s naval forces have launched a missile attack on a United States Navy vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Fars News Agency, the incident occurred on Monday after what Iran described as a violation of maritime security in the strategic waterway. The report said the U.S. warship was targeted by at least two missiles near the coastal area of Jask after allegedly ignoring warnings from Iran’s navy.
Citing local sources, the agency claimed the vessel was forced to halt its movement and retreat from the area following the strike.
Iran has repeatedly stated that any passage through the Strait of Hormuz requires its authorization and warned that violations would be met with a firm response.
There has been no immediate confirmation from U.S. officials, and no details have been released about casualties or damage resulting from the reported attack.
The reported incident comes as U.S. forces recently announced the launch of a new mission aimed at securing commercial shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
