Kabul to implement medicine pricing regulation to curb high costs

KABUL: Mawlavi Hamdullah Zahid, Deputy Minister for Food and Drugs of the Ministry of Public Health, said a newly drafted regulation to determine and control medicine prices will be implemented soon to prevent the sale of overpriced drugs in the country.
According to Radio Omid correspondent, speaking at the “2026 Pharmaceutical Industry Leaders for Innovation and Cooperation” meeting held in the capital Kabul, on Monday, warned that if custom-made or low-quality medicines are imported from abroad, the Islamic Emirate would blacklist the responsible companies and factories.
Zahid also said the import of medicines from Pakistan has been banned due to what he described as the harmful nature of some imported drugs, adding that authorities possess credible documentation to support the decision.
The deputy minister called on exporting countries to supply high-quality medicines to Afghanistan, stressing that drugs failing to meet quality standards will not be allowed into the country.
Previously, officials of the Islamic Emirate had also urged traders and medicine importers to refrain from overcharging and profiteering in the pharmaceutical market.
