KABUL: The United Nations Security Council has adopted a draft resolution condemning recent attacks by Iran on countries in the Persian Gulf and calling for an immediate halt to the strikes.
The resolution was approved amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran, according to a report by Al Jazeera on Thursday.
According to the report, the draft resolution was introduced by the Gulf Cooperation Council, in which thirteen members of the Security Council voted in favor, while Russia and China abstained. The proposal also reportedly received support from 135 member states of the United Nations.
The resolution condemned Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries and urged Tehran to immediately stop targeting regional infrastructure, including ports and energy facilities in the Gulf.
Following the vote, Saeed Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told the council that the decision marked “a deeply regrettable day for the Security Council and the international community.”
He described the adoption of the resolution as a “serious blow to the council’s credibility” and called it a “clear injustice” against Iran, arguing that his country is the victim of what he described as an “act of aggression.”
Iran’s armed forces have repeatedly stated during the conflict that they have targeted U.S. military bases and related facilities across the Middle East.
