Iran Parliament Speaker warns Strait of Hormuz could close again amid U.S. naval blockade

KABUL: Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian Parliament, has warned that the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened if the United States continues its naval blockade of Iran.

In a statement posted Saturday on X, Ghalibaf issued the warning just hours after Iran reopened the strategic waterway to commercial shipping following more than a month of closure.

He also accused Donald Trump, President of the United States, of “lying,” claiming that he made seven claims in one hour and that his seven statements were false. “They did not win with these lies in war, and they will not succeed in negotiations either,” he wrote.

Although Ghalibaf did not specify which remarks he was referring to, Trump recently said Washington would not pay for more than 400 kilograms of Iran’s highly enriched uranium. He also suggested that U.S. and Iranian forces could jointly conduct mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.

The Strait, a vital global oil transit route, was reopened a day earlier after being shut for over a month by Iranian forces. The reopening followed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon and has already led to a drop in global oil prices and a rise in market activity.
