Syria arrests Amjad Youssef in connection with Tadamon Massacre

KABUL: The Syrian Ministry of Interior says it has arrested Amjad Youssef, identified as a key suspect in the 2013 “Tadamon massacre,” one of the most serious alleged mass killings during the country’s conflict.

The ministry stated that Youssef was involved in the killing of civilians in the Tadamon district of southern Damascus in April 2013, where Syrian and Palestinian civilians were reportedly executed.

The case remained undisclosed for years until 2022, when footage published by The Guardian brought international attention to the incident.

The leaked videos reportedly showed the execution of 41 civilians, including women and children. Local residents, however, later claimed that up to 500 civilians may have been killed in the area.

Syrian Interior Minister Anas Hassan Khattab said the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to pursue individuals responsible for crimes during the conflict, adding that authorities will continue to bring perpetrators to justice.

The Tadamon massacre is considered one of the most widely cited cases of alleged atrocities during Syria’s years of war under the former Assad-era rule.
