U.S. removes Syria from list of state sponsors of terrorism

KABUL: The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The U.S. Treasury Department said the decision is expected to create greater opportunities for international investment, financial relations and economic reconstruction in Syria.

The move is being viewed as an important step toward improving relations between Washington and Damascus and could accelerate Syria’s reintegration into the global economy.

Syria had been on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism since 1979.
