Wang Yi, Araghchi discuss ceasefire, regional stability via telephone

KABUL: Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Dr. Sayed Abbas Araghchi, during which Beijing expressed support for maintaining the ceasefire and advancing peace talks.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Thursday that Beijing believes Iran’s sovereignty, security, and legitimate rights, particularly as a country bordering the Strait of Hormuz must be respected.

Wang warned that the current situation has reached a critical point between war and peace, with a narrowing window for diplomacy. He emphasized that China supports efforts to preserve the ceasefire and continue dialogue.

According to the statement, China is ready to act in line with a four-point initiative proposed by Xi Jinping, aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, reducing tensions, improving relations among regional countries, and playing a constructive role in achieving lasting peace.

The call comes as a new round of talks between the United States and Iran is expected to take place, raising global hopes for a potential peace agreement between Tehran and Washington.
